The Vultures

I was honoured to be asked to do a guest blog post for the lovely Jill at jillypopmusic. Go visit Jill for great reviews of new music, creative writing and posts about her personal journey.

Please take a look at my guest post here on jillypopmusic, where I’ve incorporated various photos of the band, along with a review. Jill posted it a few days ago, so I thought I would provide you this link and submit it to Lucile’s Photo101 Rehab Clinic.

I took these photos when I was quite new to my camera and didn’t know as much as I do now. The images aren’t as sharp as I’d like, so I thought I would share with you what I would do to capture sharper images in such low light conditions next time.

  1. Increase the ISO. You can use trial and error to determine at what ISO your photos start getting too grainy. For me, I’m happy with ISO1000 (maybe even 1600) as my maximum, but actually for band photos, I don’t mind a bit of grain, I think it adds to the mood of the photo in this case.
  2. Set a fairly wide aperture (low f number) to let in as much light as you can. If you go too low, you run the risk of having less of your photo in focus.
  3. Try to use a faster shutter speed (1/50th of a second or faster if possible). This does cut down the amount of light hitting your sensor, but it also means you won’t get as many shots with blurred fingers over guitar strings, blurred drummer arms, etc. But again, I’m not overly concerned about it for the band shots, because it does show movement which adds to the vibe of the photo.

Thanks again Jilly 🙂 for inviting me to be a part of your groovy blog, I had a blast!!

Here is the link to my guest blog post on jillypopmusic if you want to see all of the photos of The Vultures.

And now on a more serious note, about your even more serious opinion on the bass player…he’s cool!
His first photo is the best! All the others are great despite all your justified self-criticism. Be proud! xx
