Being AWOL

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAI am currently on day 8 of 14 away from home, at a conference in Lorne, Victoria. Lorne is on the Great Ocean Road, which, according to Wikipedia is an Australian National Heritage listed 243 kilometres stretch of road along the south-eastern coast of Australia between the Victorian cities of Torquay and Allansford. Built by returned soldiers between 1919 and 1932 and dedicated to soldiers killed during World War I, the road is the world’s largest war memorial. Winding through varying terrain along the coast and providing access to several prominent landmarks, including the Twelve Apostles limestone stack formations, the road is an important tourist attraction in the region.

I’d love to see the Twelve Apostles again while I’m here, but we aren’t going to get time. Erosion and time have worn away at a few of the apostles, and there are just 8 remaining.

In the meantime, I thought I would give you a little look at the lovely scenery surrounding me here at the beach – there’s not a lot of time between conference sessions, but we get an hour or two here and there to disappear and see some sights.

What do you think of my black and white header image? Should beach photos be black and white? I found the sky to be so pure and blue that it looked quite uninspiring without clouds. It was truly a glorious day, I even got sunburnt, but the sky looks dull without clouds. I don’t even think a graduated filter would have helped me in this situation.

Off for a wine, and some more views!

x desleyjane

Good day my dear! Gorgeous place, pics, and choice of gallery. I so envy you.
I liked the B&W header. There is texture and contrast enough coming form the sand, waves and people, so the monochrome worked well. Looks a bit like vintage photo. Did you try to make the other B&W too? The 1st and the one before last could be interesting!
    Enjoy the wine. Cheers! xxx

Oh I will try that. Thank you! No I’m strapped for time at the moment so I didn’t play with them so much. It really is lovely. We took a drive about an hour up the coast today – gorgeous.

Glad to hear you’re at least enjoying outdoor activities as well. Did you bring your OM baby?

Yes! I haven’t had a chance to use it much, but all of the photos for my
Last two posts (awol and koala) are taken with my OMD. I had to clean it after the beach – so much sand! X

            Ops…sand is no good.
I was caught by rain another day and almost had a heart attack (drama) as the OM 10 is not waterproof.
I also accidentally dropped the macro on the floor! Still recovering from the scare!

Oh no! My EM5 is weatherproof so can handle a little water. But dropping the macro? Really? It’s ok? That was very lucky!

So far so good…but am still afraid that it did damage something I haven’t noticed yet.

Hi desleyjayne, The beach is beautiful. The colour photos have so much blue it makes me feel warm looking at them. I think the black and white in this setting suggests the past – and maybe that fits with the rather sad story about the road as a war memorial.

Thanks Jill. That’s very thoughtful of you. I like the b&w for that reason – the vintage feel. X

The black and white header looks vintage! Love the feel 🙂 It’s true, sometimes the blue sky and the blue ocean can get simply boring.

Oh it’s marvelous. It’s my third time here, first one was when I was 5, so I only have the photos as memories. Last time, we did the entire road. This time we are just going up and down the first section. It’s fab. Come on over! X

Great location. For my own taste unless you’re deliberately going for a retro look, I find that B & W limits the contrasting colours.

Thanks Norm. Yes I was talking to my friend about it and we agreed it had a good early 70s Bondi look about it, which was what I was trying for.

I have always had a thing for black and white photography. I love the mystery of it. So, yes, absolutely beach photos can be black and white. It’s a great shot! 🙂

IMHO, black and white pictures are always welcomed. You can’t miss with monochramatic shots. If you decide to add color, that’s well and good too.

Enjoy your free time during the long conference. The scenery is gorgeous.

    Cheers,

I can imagine how busy you are at the conference but thanks for posting this for us to see! What an amazing place! And rich in history!
Your beach pics are beautiful…the blue water is so pretty…I think the B&W photo in the header is one that intrigues and reminds of years gone by…kind of like a vacation photo from yesteryear…But I think beach photos, in any shade, are beautiful…I’m glad it’s warm there…Your description makes me forget the 7 degree Fahrenheit temperatures that are assailing us!
Take care and sending you all my very best for the rest of the conference!

Thank you Lia, what a beautiful comment. It is a gorgeous place. We’ve just driven back up to Melbourne, a little over 2 hours and we’re heading out to dinner. It’s a great part of the country and I’m thinking I might spend more time here in the future! X
