Dead Close

CloseUp-29

I simply adore this shot. It’s just a dead leaf, but I am fascinated with the shapes and textures. And only a couple of centimetres across.

I was doing a shoot in the front garden for The Daily Post’s Weekly Photo Challenge (Close Up) and spotted this just above eye level, hanging down from a planter basket in a tree. The sunlight was coming from behind it and it was just a single quick shot before moving on.

When it came to editing, I was so pleasantly surprised to find this gem. It struck me that this might be a good photo for #imagereboot. Here is my Lightroom workflow:

  • camera correction and noise reduction on import
  • cropped to portrait orientation
  • increased exposure to +0.90
  • increased contrast to +100
  • decreased highlights to -79
  • increased shadows to +44
  • increased whites to +47
  • decreased blacks to -36
  • increased clarity to +100
  • some minor tweaking to individual colour saturation

Obviously, I’m sending this to Lucile’s Photo101 Rehab Clinic 🙂

Minimalism and soft focus and lots of Negative space. Its it my thing but we had a talk on it at my camera club and this image is exactly it. I hadn’t heard if it before the talk either. It’s a Japanese minimalist concept applied to photography

Ah ok thanks! So I guess I am familiar with the concept but never knew the name. I will go study it! Thanks so much for the information.

It´s cool. And wow for the editing – my only technique for post-processing my pictures is now cropping in Paint 😀

The photo is exceptionally composed and the execution is fabulous. The white background is divine, and something I love too. I tried some with my iPhone for Sally’s challenge when she gave us some links from a photographer to learn about it.
    Well done my dearest!

Thanks Joanne! And thanks for your comment on the blog. I switched to a different one but had a few people complain that it was taking over a minute to load each page! Diabolical! So I quickly changed to this one last night and I do love the cleanness of it. I’m still tweaking 😉
