Contemplation 4 – Routine

Hello and welcome to week 4 of Contemplation, where we share our responses to a prompt from my Kikki.K A Sentence a Day journal.

I’m really enjoying writing these responses each week and reading the responses from you guys as well. The open and self-reflective nature of everyone’s posts is humbling to read and I’m thankful to everyone who has joined in via responses or comments.

To join in, just tag your post Contemplation and link back to this post so that we can find it and I can link yours below for others to read as well.

Onward to this week’s prompt:

Name one thing you should do more often.

There are a number of things I should do more often – drink water, get up early, go to bed early, read, stretch, eat salad, all those not-so-exciting, but should-be-done-to-make-your-life-healthier things.

But let’s not talk about those. Those are not particularly fun. Or interesting. Although I really need to start going to bed early, I’m definitely not as young as I used to be and late nights just don’t work the same way as they did before.

I seem to have adopted a weekday routine – get up, walk Gidget, have breakfast, shower, dress, go to work, work, come home, walk Gidget, make dinner, have dinner, watch tv, hang out with social media, go to bed.

Work is usually finishing quite late, especially if I tram home, and by the time I’m back from walking GG, it’s around 7:30 or even 8pm. Which makes going to bed early a very difficult prospect. You know… life gets in the way.

So what don’t I do often enough? I know that I don’t take time to work on my personal plans. I wrote recently in a Contemplation post about what I would do if I knew I couldn’t fail. And that’s what I should be doing more often – I should be working on that plan to start a business, developing the skills that I need, organising all the things that need to be organised.

Actually, I have started looking into what I need to do, so I am working on it, slowly but I’m not nearly spending enough time on it. The next step is to unpack my spare room. When I moved in, we just put all the non-urgent boxes into the spare room, which is my office. And then I closed the door to that room and I barely ever look in there.

So something else that I need to do more often is more unpacking! That was my goal for March – get my office into shape so that I can set things up the way they need to be for my courses, my plans, my ideas. So far, I haven’t come close to achieving the unpacking goal, but there’s an extra long weekend coming up, so let’s see if I can do it then!

What should you be doing more often?

Here’s what my fellow Contemplators should be doing more often:

Hi dj, what a great prompt! I am trying to meditate and have been using the App called Windy. It’s especially helpful when I get up in the middle of the night lol. It has all these lovely nature sounds of rain and birds chirping and I fell asleep to it earlier. My usual way to relax is to watch one of my recorded shows and eat snacks. Or go online which is too stimulating. So Windy should help me relax and sleep better – I hope!

That sounds excellent. I went through a bought of not being able to sleep and I used a guided meditation on YouTube and it helped SO much. Thanks for stopping by 😊

Thank you for provoking Monday morning thought on a grey Warsaw day. Your business plans sound as if they may provide me with future pleasure as they unfold. And good luck with readying the office – I know what a difference ordered space makes to thinking.

What should I do more often? Walk at night (not in the city – too much light – but along my beloved beach.) Reread all my favourite passages that I highlight on my Kindle. Disconnect from iPad and all its temptations and pleasures. (Which I will do again as soon as this bally cold liberates me!)

Unpacking is never fun so I get why you’ve not unpacked for your study room yet! Definitely keep working on finding time to do it so that you can get started on your business plan! 😀

I can relate to the routine thing. I am the worst creature of habit ever! It is, in fact, my unwillingness to shake things up and depart from my daily rituals that keeps me stuck in the same rut. *sigh*

Sometimes you just can’t change the routine. And that’s what really sucks. I’m sighing along with you.

I can emphasise with the unpacking. Having just moved from one room Granny flat back upstairs to 3 bedrooms I just put all “junk!” in the garage and there it has stayed…

Exactly! It’s so easy to just keep the door shut. But I’m trying to see it as – I’m paying a fortune for a two bedroom apartment but am only living in one 😭😭😭

This post is so relatable – especially when you talk about the daily routine. It’s so hard, once you’re stuck in it, to actually move out of it. Even if it’s not where you want to be (exactly) you’re just… comfortable and it’s such an effort to step out of that zone. But I believe you can do it – like you said, you’ve started a bit and well, sometimes baby steps is the way to go! Good luck with unpacking too – always a chore!

Thank you, I hope I can do it too. Routine, routine, routine – the daily grind can really get us stuck can’t it? I have unfortunately put that chore off by another day 😉

Yep, totally get it as I’m writing my own Week 4 post. Sometimes, routine is such a drainer! Well… some exceptions can be made for unpacking 😛 It took me about 3 months to unpack my suitcase after coming back from Europe! Haha oopsies…
