Macro Garden Series – 12

Ok, I have no idea what this is. It’s weird, it’s part of a tree, and I really like it. But I’m clueless. Anyone?

My sweetheart tells me it’s a seedball of a sweet gum tree.

Looking at the leaf I’d agree with Susan. Liquidambar styraciflua, commonly called American sweetgum. The long-stemmed fruit balls of Liquidambar resemble those of the American sycamore or buttonwood. Should be a gorgeous red/yellow/orange in the autumn.

Looks like the seed pod of a liquid amber tree. Those stupid balls fall off in the fall and will twist your ankle if you step on one! But the leaves in Autumn? No comparison! Go back in your autumn 🙂

Aha! Susan said the seed pod of a sweet gum…. I didn’t realise they would be hard! Ok, I will go back in Autumn, definitely. Thanks!

It looks very similar to the sycamore tree seed balls I have all over my yard. Mine are brown, but maybe they’re green while still in the tree.

Thank you, it seems a consensus that they’re seed balls or seed pods. We have three types of trees but maybe they’re similar trees.
