iheartmycamera

I am addicted to photography. I carry my camera everywhere. And three lenses.

This blog was supposed to be about travel. And sometimes it is. But it has become a place for me to share my photography with this lovely community. I have also started writing short stories and I find that I am loving that as well. It’s a great outlet and I seem to write a lot when I fly (and I fly a lot).

I’ve always loved taking photos – seeing a frame around a scene, capturing a moment, recording memories. I love the colour and the light and the whole process. I can’t tell you how good it feels to leave everything behind for a couple of hours and just take my camera on a walk to see the world around me.

I travel often for my job, mainly around Australia, but occasionally to the UK and the US. I’m a scientist (chemistry, biochemistry, biology) who left a research lab to take a job teaching other scientists how to use robotics – yep, robots. I’ll show you them one day soon.

So, my camera, my science, recently my writing, there’s one more – my puppy, Gidget. She is a sweet little dog with such intelligence and a sassy attitude. She loves nothing more than when we curl up on the couch together (see my photo below).

I love sharing my photos, thoughts and experiences with you. I am including some science here as well, which I hope you will find interesting. If you are interested in finding out about how and why I got into science, please visit this page here.

Thank you for stopping by and I hope you come back to visit again soon.

  1. It’s interesting to see how a scientist who usually has a traditional and conservative lifestyle would develop into a creative artist. I’ve seen your pictures and enjoyed your numerous trips.

You seem to be part a new breed of artistic scientists. I’ll drink to that. Skoll!

    Keep them coming, Desley Jane.

    Best Wishes,

    Omar.-

  2. Read your story with great interest, DesleyJane. I have an 18-year-old daughter getting ready to begin college next fall to study human biology (with a great interest in research) 🙂 So happy that you’re taking the time to really “see” on your travels – it’s wonderful for the soul!

    1. How exciting for your daughter! I remember the start, it was so much fun. Yes it IS good for the soul. I love my job but it feels like the thought that I can pick up my camera at the end of the day and lose myself “behind the lens” really motivates me to work harder. Best wishes to your daughter and to you. I hope we can hear how she’s doing as she goes on her journey!

  3. Hello Desley Jane, your introduction is welcoming and your blog is amazing. We have bumped at each other’s blogs through Photo101 but I hadn’t yet had time to stop by and read more, due to the course, and NaBloPoMo. I’m going to do so by following you from now on.

    1. Hi love – thank you for this, of course I will most humbly accept. I have been nominated for this one late last year but still haven’t posted my response (such a bad blogger).
Your message to me was in my spam folder, so I only just found it sorry!
      🙂

  6. When someone says scientist, usually the first picture in one’s head is that of a nerd! But here is a scientist who is so creative and takes lovely photographs! Glad to have stumbled upon your blog Desley and look forward to reading more.
