Five Minutes with Hydrangea – RegularRandom

Oh my!

I went to buy a bunch of flowers for home. I love to have fresh flowers and I always end up shooting them. I wasn’t sure what I would find and I didn’t have anything particular in mind, except of course, you know I love pink.

They had these gorgeous hydrangeas for just $25 for a bunch. I popped them in this mason jar that I had bought from the same florist last year and added this pretty blue and white striped ribbon.

I love it. I spent about 30 minutes shooting it and then another few minutes with a journalling setup with I will share separately. I took more than 60 photos and this is just 17 photos in a 5 minute time period.

It was tough to choose a five minute set of photos to show you here, but this set gives you some full shots as well as some close ups. I hope you enjoy them.

Fancy joining the RegularRandom brigade?! Jump on board. Here’s how:

  • choose a subject or a scene
  • spend five minutes photographing it – no more!
  • try to not interfere with the subject, instead see it from many angles, look through something at it, change the light that’s hitting it
  • have fun!

What a superb tribute to the hydrangea. Not my favourite flower, but this makes me rethink my prejudices. The lead photo is dense with beauty, and all that negative space really showcases the individual flowerets, or whatever they’re called. Beautiful.

Thanks Meg. I still have them sitting on my sink in a vase, I really need to tidy up!! Apparently you can grow them quite easily from the cut flower. I’m giving them to a friend to grow for me since she has a backyard!

Apart from the obvious pastel beauty of your compositions, Desley Jane, the other interesting thing when seeing them together on the screen, is the sudden whoosh in energy they evoked in my brain. Which is rather paradoxical: the shades are visually calming, but somehow also psychically stimulating. Obviously tapping into to some childhood sensation when all was new and sparkly 🙂

Wow that’s fabulous. What a great comment. Did it entice you to do something energy-filled?! Thanks so much Tish.

Gave me a lift for the daily writing process which is otherwise a bit plodding 🙂
