Five Minutes with Sunflowers – RegularRandom

I spent much longer than five minutes with these beauties, so I’m just sharing a five-minute stint with you in this post. I’ll share some other, more intricate photos in other posts.

But for today’s RegularRandom, let’s start with the rules:

  • choose a subject or a scene
  • spend five minutes photographing it – no more!
  • try to not interfere with the subject, instead see it from many angles, look through something at it, change the light that’s hitting it
  • have fun!
  • tag your post #regularrandom and ping back to this post

I’ve had a particularly difficult couple of weeks at work and one of my colleagues, who has become a firm friend, sent me these gorgeous sunflowers to add a little sunshine to my day. So lovely, it’s just like her to think of doing something like this, although it was a huge surprise to receive them. Especially on Friday, an incredibly hard day for me. More about that later, but for now, let’s get into the five minutes of sunny goodness.

First, here’s the complete view, because you must know by now that I immediately switched to macro and went to town shooting these 🙂

These first two shots are with the 17mm (35mm equivalent) lens.

All subsequent shots are with my 60mm macro (120mm equivalent) and my absolute favourite lens.

Sunflowers-16
Gorgeous, even without colour.

These are utterly joyful. I love the bright yellow against the white background. Here’s my contribution. https://wordandimagecollages.wordpress.com/2017/10/15/chronic-boredom/

I thought I’d commented before I posted, but obviously not! I too love sunflowers, and you’ve done them proud. When I was teaching in Broken Hill I used to pick them from the side of the road for my classroom desk. You’ve photographed them from angles I’d never have thought of. And b&w adds another dimension.

Thanks Meg! How nice to be able to pick them yourself for your desk. I might see if I can take a couple with me to work tomorrow.

Ohh, I wonder if that would come with a pay rise LOL.
Thanks so much Su, that means a lot. And yes, she is a very thoughtful person, I’mlucky to have her. x

Wonderful gallery. Am especially impressed by the ‘undercarriage’ shots. Just goes to show, there’s more to a sunflower than its pretty face 🙂

I wish all my five minutes were as productive as this! This technique is just perfect for you – you and Julz should video each other doing one of these sessions.

Perfect! Lovely sunny, happy sunflowers – like you I never buy them for the house, but maybe I should consider that next year – aim to always have a bunch of flowers. I used to before I moved here, but somehow fell out of the habit.

I was buying a bunch of flowers every week for a while this year but stopped. I noticed that the place who delivered these sunflowers also have a subscription service which seems like a great idea but a bit pricey 😕 Thanks Jude!

Yes, some florists can be expensive, but supermarket bouquets are reasonable and in the end all cut flowers generally only last a week. I do bring in sweet peas, but can’t bear to cut tulips.

True, I usually buy supermarket flowers for $10. For macro, I just need one exquisite beauty 😋

Thanks so much Deb! Some more shots to come over the next week. They are so pretty. They almost look unreal sitting on my kitchen table and they make me smile whenever I see them.

I can just imagine! We are growing some from seed at the moment and they are just starting to take off, it’s amazing to watch them sprout and I’ll be sure to capture them as they grow 🌻

Excellent. I’m pretty sure we had some growing on the farm near our chook house, just growing from the seed mix that we fed them.
